How to Prove You Are the Owner of an Item?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

To claim an item, start by clicking “Claim item” on the item page. You’ll then be asked to describe the item in detail. Provide as much information as possible — especially control features: details that only the real owner would know and that the finder can verify by looking at the item.

The more specific and accurate your description, the faster the finder can confirm that the item belongs to you.

What Information Should I Provide?

Below are suggestions for different types of items. Use these as guidance when writing your description:

Wallet

  • Your name

  • Date of birth

  • Last 4 digits of any card number inside

Bank Card / Credit Card

  • Last 4 digits of your account or card number

  • Name of your bank

Mobile Phone

  • Brand and model

  • Background image

  • SIM provider

  • Device language

  • Distinguishing external features (case, stickers, damage)

  • IMEI number (only if necessary)

ID Card / Passport / Personal OV-chipkaart

  • Your initials

  • Nationality

  • Date of birth (day + month only)
Important: Never share your citizen service number or social security number.

Clothing

  • Brand and size

  • Anything stored in the pockets

Backpack / Bag

  • Specific valuable or unique items inside

  • Distinguishing marks or features

If the Finder Needs More Information

Sometimes the finder may ask additional questions to make sure the item truly belongs to you. This is normal — it’s simply part of ensuring the item is returned to the rightful owner.

On average, you can expect a response within 1 to 3 business days.

Important to Know

  • Many organisations only respond during office hours and may be closed on weekends.

  • iLost does not handle claims itself. Each claim is reviewed and handled by the organisation that found and registered the item.
